OpenPGP on Windows

OpenPGP on Linux

• On Ubuntu Linux: System -> Administraction -> Synaptic Package Manager: Install kgpg and mozilla-thunderbird-enigmail. Synaptic wil automatically install all dependencies including GnuPG and Thunderbird. It is possible to simply use the default Evolution email client as well as KMail instead of Thunderbird.

OpenPGP on MacOS X

• Download MacGPG and follow these excellent instuctions.

Generic Steps

1. Install the GnuPG software and helper application. (WinPT on Windows, kgpg on Linux and MacGPG on Mac OS X).
2. Generate a keypair. (WinPT will prompt you the first time you run it)
3. Right click and save our public key: support.asc
4. Import public key: choose the file from step 3.
5. Mark imported key as ultimately trusted.
6. Export your public key.
7. Send us encrypted email with your public key.
   

Advantages of OpenPGP

• No CA required - no need to give anyone any information to generate your key pair.
• Encryption of files and of clipboard content is easy.
  

• Clipboard encryption can be used with webmail programs.
  

Notes:

• Take care with webmail programs like GMail that save the content of the webmail editor every few minutes - this could mean cleartext is saved to their servers before encryption. Use a separate editor to compose messages and encrypt before pasting content into newly Composed email messages.
